On Sept. 23, people around the world celebrated #BiVisibilityDay, pushing back against the erasure, invisibility and biphobia many bisexual individuals experience.
Bisexual people experience higher rates of depression and anxiety and report experiencing stigma and discrimination due to their identities from both straight and gay people. They also experience other health disparities, such as higher rates of addiction and heart disease, as well as higher rates of domestic violence, sexual assault and poverty. Many say they feel isolated and don’t see enough accurate representation in the media.
But more and more bisexual, pansexual and queer public figures are coming forward to own their identities and chip away at those disparities little by little. From performers to politicians and athletes, here are a few openly bisexual celebs who tweeted about 2019’s #BiVisibilityDay this Sept. 23.
1) Joshua Rush
Teen actor, host, and political commentator Joshua Rush played the Disney Channel’s first openly gay character, Cyrus, on “Andi Mack.” Just last month, he came out as bisexual on social media and has since been vocal about the erasure and misconceptions so many bisexual people face. In honor of #BiVisibilityDay, Rush wrote an empowering message about embracing diversity within the bisexual community.
2) Rep. Katie Hill
Rep. Katie Hill, U.S. Representative for California’s 25th Congressional district and Co-Chair of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus, is the first openly bisexual member of Congress to serve the state of California. She has previously spoken out about the importance of owning her bisexual identity while married to a man, in part due to common misconceptions about bisexuality and in part due to the higher rates of poverty and assault that bi people experience.
3) Evan Rachel Wood
Evan Rachel Wood came out way back in 2012 and has been a bicon ever since. She tweeted about Brenda Howard, a bisexual woman known as the “Mother of Pride.”
4) Raquel Willis
Black queer transgender activist and writer Raquel Willis, the current executive editor of OUT Magazine, a former Women’s March speaker, and the designer of the Black Trans Flag, tweeted about the bi+ population (encompassing bisexual, fluid, pansexual, and queer identities) in celebration of #BiVisibilityDay.
5) Nyle DiMarco
OK, we’re cheating a little bit on this one, but it seemed like a nod to the day to us. In addition to #BiVisibilityDay, Sept. 23 was also the International Day of Sign Languages, so we couldn’t resist including the Deaf and sexually fluid model/actor on this list:
6) Lilly Singh
YouTuber, comedian and host of the new late-night show “A Little Late With Lilly Singh” on NBC, Lilly Singh is the first openly bisexual late-night host. She came out earlier this year, receiving a massive show of support from fans.
For #BiVisibilityDay, she shared a recent quote of hers on embracing marginalized identities as superpowers.
7) Piper Niven
Scottish WWE wrestler Viper-Piper Niven even took the opportunity to come out on #BiVisibilityDay!
Openly bisexual since her rise to fame in 2015, Halsey celebrated #BiVisibilityDay with nods to birthdays, bisexuality and The Boss.
